Matty Upson
When it comes to releasing players it isn't often Wenger drops a bollock. He did with Matty Upson. The defender we signed from Luton for a couple of packets of instant noodles and a subscription to Beezer was allowed to leave because he wanted first team football and Wenger couldn't offer it.
He should have done. He should have stuck him in the heart of the defence and said 'you are my rock, around you will I build a team'.
Upson never really got any long runs in the side, he never was made to feel he was a first team regular. Once he went on loan his Arsenal career was over.
Exactly the same thing happened with Phillipe Senderos. Never getting a good run now quietly shipped away.
Perhaps Upson could do a Keown. When George Graham arrived he didn't fancy Keown's wage demands and let him leave only to bring back a much stronger, more determined player six years later.
But we all now Wenger has no interest in the defence. They're just players to fill out the white board formations. The fact that he continues with Gallas is all the proof we need.
